Buying the best tennis racket can be hard. In this guide, I'm going to give you some advice to help make the decision a little easier. Read more below...

Know Your Skill Level. Rackets are divided into 3 types: power rackets (most beneficial for amateurs and intermediates who wants to learn tennis quickly), tweeners (for intermediate and advanced players) and control rackets (best for advanced players). By classifying your skill level, you'll immediately narrow the type of rackets to consider.

Know Your Alternatives. Head size, racket length, weight and string tension are all important things to consider when choosing your racket. A bigger head size will provide more power, but a smaller head will give you better control.

Length is also important. Rackets are obtainable in lengths from 27-29 inches. A longer racket will give you with more reach for ground strokes, and is usually more powerful than a short racket. Shorter rackets are also heavier than their longer counterparts.

Heavy rackets pack a more powerful blow that can also improve your tennis serve, but light rackets are more maneuverable and provide better control. Mid-weight rackets are a good alternative, because they pack an improved mixture of control and power.

Almost all tennis rackets available for purchase will be pre-strung with a fixed amount of tension in the strings. Having your racket restrung is usually an alternative. Tight strings will provide you more control, and loose strings give more power.

Know Your Grip. Position your hand around the grip. You'll find a space where your finger and palm meet. Position your forefinger from your other hand in the middle of that space. Does it fit? Perfect! The grip is right for you. If there's too much space, the grip is too big. If there's not enough space, seek something smaller.

Know Your Price. If you're truly committed to enhancing your game, then cost should be no issue. For some of us, that's not ideal. If you're just getting started, you can even try a used racket, just to know what you like or dislike. Finally, only you know what you can afford.

There are lots of tutorials, quizzes and demos online to help accomplish this process easier, but the most important thing is testing the rackets for yourself. Does the racket feel too light or heavy in your hand? Do you have a good grip on the handle? Is the head too huge?

Follow your instinct, and you'll be on your way.
